Community rewards and collaborations
There’s been some interesting developments around community rewards this week, with Reddit deciding to scrap coins and awards at the same time as Twitter has begun payouts to verified creators.
We want our rewards to be meaningful, and a genuine recognition of the effort members put into their contributions to Just About. Not something that can be easily gamed or exploited, awarding spam or poor content.
Our intention with all our rewards is to recognise prosocial behaviour and creativity. We’re also focused on the community, not the individual. For those reasons, rewards on Just About need to be designed carefully and tested thoroughly. Members can earn financial rewards a few different ways; bounties, advertising, being a top contributor, or taking on a community role. And even those have more nuance - details of which we’re hammering out right now during our Alpha phase.
It’s complicated and requires work to get right, but then it has to be. Because just showering badges and money at members doesn’t work in the long term. We’re creating community spaces first and foremost, with incentives as a bonus to a welcoming space, where you can come together with like-minded folk and enjoy your passions together.
Community Collab
Last week we hosted our first Community Collab at Develop: Brighton. It was a sell-out success with standing room only!
Over three sessions our panelists discussed how to engage with and respond to community activism, ways to turn community members into fans, and how to successfully manage communities. You can read the takeaways and check out pics from the event right here.
This was really our first chance to take our heads out of the Alpha for a couple of days and speak with the industry, with community managers, and with some of our members. We found it really useful and came away feeling energised. If you were there, we hope you found it useful too. And thanks once again for everyone that give their time for the event.
Come and work with us!
Speaking of community managers, we’re on the look out for a community manager to join us at Just About. Is that you? You can find the full job spec here. And as we continue to grow, we’re also looking for someone to spearhead our marketing - you’ll find the job ad for that right here. Phew, it’s a busy time.
This week on Just About
We’ve seen a steady influx of new members join Just About this week, and we’re very grateful for the contributions to discussions, help with bug hunts, and little thumbs up emoji you leave around the place.
We encourage everyone to share their thoughts - we don’t bite - it’s all very easy.
